so if you are in the FBI or in the CIA, are you not supposed to let people know about it?

how do you become an FBI or CIA agent?

LOL stacy! So random!! I think you can let your family know... but no one else. Remember Valerie Plume? There was that scandal because the Bush administration "accidentally" leaked out her name?

It depends on your position in the FBI/CIA. Like, there are secretarial desk work/internships/officials, so you treat it just like any other governmental agency; however, if you're an actual field agent or intelligence gatherer then you have to keep it secret. Still, you should err on the side of caution. Like, my dad can tell people he works for JPL and it's okay, but he can't go around telling people secrets about his tsunami research and what not.

To become an FBI or CIA agent, you do it like any other job: go on the website and apply. :) You get an interview time, they do EXTENSIVE background checks, etc. It's a pretty prestigious job so treat it like trying to get a position at a Top Fortune company.
