Part One: Marty ( or The Five Stages of Acceptance)

October 7th 1994 was the day Marty Hart’s life as he knew it ended. He had woken up by his daughters, surrounded by their laughter and Maggie’s smile and all was good in the world. The knowing Quesada had finally found a partner for him (this would be partner numero 4 with in his 8 years working CID) again, kicked his ass out of bed all the while his hoped this partner wouldn’t be eaten by an alligator, damn Figoreau. Not for any amount of money would he taken that bet to swim in that dank murky pond. But no, Figoreau just had to take the dare and his stupid ass was eaten, literally, only a year into their partnership. Folks at the station had started giving him crap about it, even saying he was unlucky. Lucky Cathleen took up after him and made it clear that if they kept messing with Marty, they would be on their own when trying to coax the truly cursed copier and fax machine.

Maggie had an early shift at the hospital so Marty was the one to take the girls to school. He arrived a bit late, having to go back home to collect the lunches Maggie had made for them all and take them back to the girls’ school, but it was also enough time for his new partner to get settled and Quesada to give him the heads up on Marty. He strolled in and stopped by Cathleen’s desk to greet her and gossip just a bit, but she saw him and gave him this look. A Guide look. A look that resonated in him whenever he had seen it in the past but left had always let it be and didn’t let anybody poke at, not after his father had-

Quesada’s door opened and-

The sequence of events that had Marty across the bullpin, Marty never remembered, no one who had witnessed Marty and Rust meeting for the first time ever commented on it but how anyone missed the world ending (except for Cathleen) was something Marty wondered for a long time. It came a head when Marty went to shake Rust’s hand, and that something that Marty had never let be poked, poked back. It was all Marty could do to hold it together and go over any cases Marty had caught but hadn’t closed yet.

Marty left earlier than usually, calling Maggie to let her know that he’d pick up the girls. Cathleen grasped his hand as he left and pulled him into a hug in the records room before letting him go without saying a word. The presence of Audrey and Macie soothed his soul, especially Audrey who had quieted when she saw him but basically spent the afternoon cuddling with Marty, even after Maggie came home. Marty continued to hold it together, not letting Maggie get it out of him until the girls were asleep. He sat on the side of the bed, turning it over, willing with everything he had that that thing Marty and Maggie had only talked about once and then let it be deciding to play that dice roll, shrivel up and die like that pear tree in the backyard, still needing to be chopped down. Finally Maggie was standing in front of him asking what was wrong, her concern an emotion he could feel as if it was his own.

“Remember,” Marty finally started, “…Remember when we talked about that thing, that thing that was in our blood.” Her eyes widen and he knew it didn’t have to say anything else. And there it was. The world was over and a sob broke through and he couldn’t stop, not even when Maggie immediately wrapped herself around him tight.

“It’s okay Marty. It will be okay. We will work this out.” Her voice was steady and repeating and soft, so soft, but he could feel her heartbreaking like it was his own, hell, his heart was breaking too. And it knew it would not be okay.
