I go to a lot of performing arts events. A lot. Not as many as I'd like to, but I average at least three to four plays, concerts, dance shows, or other events a month; often (usually) more--and that's not even counting the shows I'm working on ( Read more... )

Interesting point. I go to a lot of concerts in small venues and I've seen acts where polite applause happens and no standing O. But you're right. For the most part it's expected now.

It's interesting that at school, I don't see standing ovations. I think it's because art students have that knowledge that they and their peers are still learning and growing, and quite frankly, most of the shows aren't standing-ovation-worthy.

I can rant forever about audience education and development, and teaching people to be good audience members, but I thought I'd spare everyone and just touch on a little part for today. :)

So true. Which then means that any show that doesn't get a standing O probably leaves the performers thinking, what did we do wrong? It's unfortunate.

I've noticed this, too! I tend to think of it in the same vein as grade inflation. Everyone thinks that if they meet the requirements, they deserve the A, or in this case the O... instead of realizing that those things are supposed to hallmark exemplary work.
