Get your cards

I have done a number of things over the last few days to avoid working on my dissertation. Despite this, I have a first draft done and dusted and with my supervisor for comments. Possibly the most timewasting thing I have done is to download the software from Objectif Tarot and play a few hands of Tarot (which apparently in English is called " ( Read more... )

That's really interesting! I know there are a small number (a few dozen, normally attracting fewer than ten per monthly meeting) of people who meet up to play the German card game Skat in the UK; you could do worse than trying to ask them, not least because among their number is John McLeod of the unparalleled pagat card games web site.

The other thought is that there is a French bridge club in London, which meets up at the same location (though not the same time, obv.) as the British Skat players. Seems like there ought to be some players there. I also imagine it would be worth trying whatever authentic French hangouts there are in the city as well.

I had a bet with myself that when I woke up there would be one comment on this post, and it would be you :)

I would say at this point but never , never ever ever.

Glad to be of service - and on time, too! I only hope that my comment was sufficiently interesting and/or useful for you to win your bet.

I shall certainly investigate when I have more free time. Interestingly the FFT website lists no clubs outside France (well, in French dependencies also, but they count as France...) though the game is definitely played quite widely in Quebec, probably out of sheer bloodymindedness.

I have a deck, somewhere. If it is any incentive, the game is in my experience immeasurably improved by the presence of cigars.

78-card Bourgeois Deck located. Availability dependent on how radically my supervisor wants me to amend my dissertation when she gives me her feedback on my second draft (which is the first time she's seen a full draft).

Also, at some point in the next few weeks, likely to be taking a curry-enjoying friend to the Nepalese in Euston. We will need to invite other people to ensure it doesn't feel like a date (it is definitely not a date). I think you would get on and I know you like curry. Interested?
