I don’t often grocery shop on Sundays anymore. I’ve got my schedule wrapped pretty tight - CSA delivery on Wednesday, evaluate contents & menu plan on Thursday, shop Friday after work but before my weekly call with my best friend. And while on the phone, I unpack groceries and wash and prepare CSA veggies ( Read more... )

I feel exactly the same way about black figs and blueberries. They are heaven on earth.

aren't they amaaaaaazing!!! Seth doesn't get me on the figs; fine, all the more for me.

and Fran's chocolates here in Seattle makes these amazing fig chocolates - dried figs, injected with ganache and then dipped in chocolate. I do *not* share - but take them one at a time & indulge while soaking in a rose water bath with a cup of earl grey & cream nearby.

I kind of don't understand people that don't want to be involved in their food. I am completely dumbfounded by the process of photosynthesis - I'm eating raw sunshine at every meal, and dirt and insects and worm poop and farmer's hands and river water and fresh air. It just doesn't get any better. Biting into fresh summer fruits lets me know that there is a higher power.

I'm one of those who remains pretty un-involved with food. I have an almost totally utilitarian relationship to it - very unimaginitive. Not sure why. It may be related to my eating-disordered stepmother... it makes me kinda sad that I don't fully embrace this aspect of life.

I can totally see how a parental eating disorder would interfere with the discovery of joy & magic in food. I can get utilitarian also - I'm into the science of nutrition and eat in particular ways when I train hard. But the one thing my mother/family did right was food. In my early years, we hunted for almost all of our meat - gruesome to some but really puts you in touch with what it takes to sustain you. There was always a garden, even in our very short mountain growing season. And summers were filled with canning veggies, pickles, fruits & jams to get through the long winter months. It wasn't until much later in life that I came to appreciate the simple bounty of my childhood meals. My mother was also a stickler for homemade food and family dinner - though she worked fulltime which meant family dinner could be at 10pm. But all in all, I'm still grounded in these habits and philosophies now. And there is a deeper spiritual context for me now.

that is *not* true. you have favorites and now that you realize the food will keep coming you're even a bit picky... wrinkling up your nose 'do I like that?'

but you are a good eater
