Today, apparently, is Cinco de Mayo: a national holiday in Mexico commemorating the Mexican army's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It's also an unofficial festival in the USA ( Read more... )

I'm told that it's not actually that big a deal in Mexico itelf, only in the expat Mexican communitites.

Any excuse to eat yummy Mexican food and drink beer can't be entirely bad.

...unless you're like me and can't eat spicy food or drink alcohol... :)

People round here don't tend to drink beer on Cinco de Mayo. Instead, they drink tequila. It gets them drunker faster. Beer is for every other day of the year.

In thirty years time, after the collapse of the United States, Mexicans will gather on the 4th July to eat burgers and drink JB. That, and complain about the poor quality of Californian domestics and the problems of Texan and Floridan pirates attacking shipping.
