I've created a subversion repository for my huge assembly code project. Realistically I don't know how much it'll help but at least if I break something and can't find it I can easily access backups...
Subversion not so good. I really like Git. It stays out of your way, and is immediately more flexible (I can't live without git stash and git add -i, which are awkward at best to emulate in Svn). Plus, you can interoperate with Subversion via git-svn.
