so a really really cool thing happened to me last night.
while waiting for the a train, i gave this guy directions to the apollo theater. as he was exiting the train at 125th, he gave me his card and said he had tickets to a taping of a show for the sundance channel, featuring elvis costello. and to text him if i wanted to go. very nice of him.
so i'm sitting at home watching federer pretty much dominate at the open, and thought to myself, "hey, i've never been to the apollo, so this taping thing could be cool. let's do it." so i text the guy and get back on the train to see what this show is all about.
turns out it's a conversation and concert with rufus wainwright and renee fleming. elvis costello interviews them both, they sing and play, then everyone got together and did some folk tunes (with guest appearance by rufus' mom kate mcgarrigle on banjo). renee sang some jazz, rufus sang some art song, musical worlds collided...it was a really awesome show. and perhaps i'll be in some of the audience shots when it airs!
so if you get sundance channel, you should tivo "Spectacle: Elvis Costello with..." or whatever they end up calling it. it starts airing in december. elton john co-produces it and i guess is in some of the episodes. and the guy who gave me the ticket told me some of the other guests include smokey robinson, lou reed, the police, and tony bennett.
annnnnnnnnnd if it wasn't coincidental enough that some random dude unknowingly gave an opera singer a ticket to something featuring an opera singer...rufus was accompanied by a composer friend of mine from high school whom i haven't seen since graduation. seriously. what the freak.
when stuff like this happens, it reminds me how much i flipping LOVE nyc.
