i've been seeing a lot of live theatre lately. here's a list (with brief reviews) of every broadway show and met performance i've seen over the past 2 months. just for kicks.
13 (the musical) - great concept, interesting book, amazingly talented teenagers (including the band!), fun show.
hairspray - was really neat to see with marisa janet winkour and harvey fierstein in their original roles. high-energy fun show, but i didn't totally love it.
gypsy - again, cool to see a big star like patti lupone, but i didn't fall in love with the production.
thais - meh. even renee fleming was sorta meh. but the cristian lacroix costumes were gorgeous!
garden of earthly delights - this show is AWESOME. and i'm not just saying that cuz my roommate's boyfriend is in it. a very cool dance show (based on the hieronymous bosch painting), and set to tour this summer, so go see it if it comes to your town. :)
billy elliott - incredible dancing, some very cool staging concepts, and some nice musical numbers, but i felt like elton was trying a little too hard to remind everyone that he wrote all the music.
shrek - um. the cast worked their asses off in attempts to make this show work...but it just doesn't.
orfeo ed euridice - great production, very cool staging/dancing by mark morris and company, and stephanie blythe is a force to be reckoned with.
equus - unlike my friend who came with me, i was totally enthralled and engaged the whole time. richard griffiths is brilliant, and little harry potter most certainly held his own. (also, daniel radcliffe is naked for an awkwardly long period of time, so, props for that. kid's got balls...pun intended.)
pal joey - ahh, it's fun to see old-school musicals! stockard channing is superdiva cool. the storyline is sort of a bummer and the lead dude didn't quite carry off the sinatra-esque charm, but a good show.
august osage county - just got back from this tonight, and am still reeling and processing the depth and amazingness that is this show. sure, theater snobs can scoff and say tennessee williams did it better, but this is the best play i've ever seen.
on the docket: hedda gabler with mary-louise parker, waiting for godot with nathan lane and bill irwin and john goodman, in the heights, avenue q (no, i still haven't seen it), eugene onegin at the met, and a concert featuring kristen chenoweth. yes, i am a bit addicted to broadway right now. it's good to live in new york.
