Be careful what you sing for, it is said, you may actually get it.

I should know, as I have heard so many songs. My patience and memory for songs and stories are endless. And some are remembered as lessons.

"Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school,
We have tortured every teacher, we have broken every rule..."

I've been thinking on this one literally for months. It was, at first, a straight nonfic but since I was feeling a mysterious aspect to it all I switched the POV to something more spiritual and in the process it became the schoolhouse itself.

When I started thinking on the aspect of mythical creatures, I realized I had to go with what the original spirits of the land were. So I looked up the tribes of the area and went from there. My gnome-like stone guardians in the original concept gave way to the tribal belief in the stone (and trees and animals) having Spirit entities.

I love this Native American feel but it was oh so sad.

I had originally planned on going further with the story, but it didn't feel right diluting the effect. The actual school (name was changed) never fully recovered and eventually closed as the law changed so that the town's district could consolidate with the town across the county line. Still, can't help but feel sad since it was the only school I went to.
