Aww, poor dude. I've never seen that poem before either, though.

Which one? I know the "Riley" one is kinda obscure. I didn't really know about it until I did some web-searching to see if anyone had given the pitcher who struck out Casey a name. I really struggled with what to write for "closer," then thought of the baseball definition and took it from there.

Sucker for any kind of sports story on her. Nice fresh take on Casey at the Bat.

Thanks. I like that it forced me to do a little research, and more thoroughly revisit the poem.

I didn't realize that about the first sentence connecting back to Idol till you pointed that out.

People have always looked at "Casey" from one perspective as that was what Thayer wrote it in, and everyone latched onto the lesson regarding overconfidence and hubris. Such sportswriting is common to this day, in the biz a writer is known as a "homer" for always seeing things through the lens of the home team -- it's actually expected and often celebrated to a degree. But, yeah, the nine people playing defense, and especially that closing pitcher, are usually disregarded in the story, yet they had their parts to play, too.

Hurrah for baseball stories :) Really clever to use "Casey at the Bat" too.

Thanks! I'm surprised I did so well, considering I'm no good as a baseball player.

Love this approach to the topic, and the fact that I didn't realize until the last few paragraphs what story this was!

Thanks! I like it when it's not obvious, but hope the story is strong enough for those who guess right off. Glad it worked for you. =)
