Which one? I know the "Riley" one is kinda obscure. I didn't really know about it until I did some web-searching to see if anyone had given the pitcher who struck out Casey a name. I really struggled with what to write for "closer," then thought of the baseball definition and took it from there.
I didn't realize that about the first sentence connecting back to Idol till you pointed that out.
People have always looked at "Casey" from one perspective as that was what Thayer wrote it in, and everyone latched onto the lesson regarding overconfidence and hubris. Such sportswriting is common to this day, in the biz a writer is known as a "homer" for always seeing things through the lens of the home team -- it's actually expected and often celebrated to a degree. But, yeah, the nine people playing defense, and especially that closing pitcher, are usually disregarded in the story, yet they had their parts to play, too.
