I think that many people feel a sense of relief or gladness when they finally get a diagnosis--because a diagnosis often means that treatment can then begin, or at the very least there's an explanation for what's happening in their head.

True. It's kind of a turning point, not the end of the story by a longshot, but the beginning of a better chapter.

Very intriguing piece! It's definitely a relief to know not only that you aren't alone, but that enough people have dealt with what you're going through that there's a name for it. Giving something a name makes it easier to pin down, solidifies it a bit so you can get to know it better.

I'd seen the name for it -- "depression" -- before, but didn't think the label fit. Turns out the diagnosis covers a variety of symptoms and conditions, and "traits" of other diagnoses were noted.

I've since come across the saying, "Depression lies." And I think that definitely applies here.

Funny, I wrote a whole idol piece for some past season about just that.

I have had some of those thoughts. And it can be oddly freeing to understand that the thoughts are a symptom of something that is treatable.

Even the fleeting clarity of diagnosis is clarity of a sort.
