The "playing by ear" is something that my husband canNOT do (he can't pick out even "Mary had a little lamb" on the piano), yet insists he is not tone-deaf (nobody in his family can sing. It's horrifying). I think I first did that around age 3, but as far as I know, neither of our (now teenaged) kids has tried it. How do you NOT try it? The piano is right there!

Too bad your kids haven't tried an instrument. I've often heard adults lament that they never learned one, I sense it's a common regret.
