Peas in a pod

This was one garden chore that Lyle didn't mind.

He sat on the wide wooden swing, his feet just touching the porch floor enough to rock it gently, shelling green peas into a bowl on his lap. Beside him sat a basket of freshly-picked full pods; on the floor nearby a box caught empty pods as he tossed them.

As others have said, this is one particularly slice-of-lifey slice of life. In a sense, the smallness of the pea pods would seem to represent the dual triviality and essentialness of this moment. Not sure how you achieve that, but you achieve that.

Thanks. Some things like that are almost unconscious. For instance, after writing this I came up with the title, and it was *then* that I realized the double meaning, that "peas in a pod" could refer to the two siblings.
