I related to this piece very much. I had a best friend that I grew up with and we lived on the same street and were practically inseparable. Now we haven't really spoken since high school graduation. So, the consideration in your poem of "did you change, or they," was on point for me.
There is something about this form that seems so apt for engaging with the topic. Probably because of the sense of recurrence, but in progressively different contexts. I can feel heavily the presence of social media in this, and thought the segment "Online they grill like an auto-de-fe, / Positive everyone must see their way," was a brilliant statement on that.
Initially getting the idea together in my head, I settled on ending every line on a long "a" to develop that aspect of rhythm. Of course, this made constructing the lines more tricky. Once I had that idea, the term auto-de-fe popped into my head. First learned when I read "Candide," I now think of the "Inquisition" number from Mel Brooks' "History of the World, Part 1": "Auto-de-fe? What's an Auto-de-fe? It's what you oughtn't-a do, but you do anyway..."
Very interesting. Thank you for your commentary on this, it is cool to hear about your creative process. And I have to admit, your usage of the term is what caused me to need to look it up. I do think as a concept, it is perfectly apt as a metaphor, considering out current Social Media Phenomenon.
