At the end of the novel, he is last seen carrying his creator's body across the arctic ice. Shelley wrote him as being more intelligent and verbal than you see in the movies. And being more legend than man (like Santa), of course he would also be immortal. As I included him, it gave me an answer to where the materials for the North Pole workshops came from (living on a continent-sized ice patch, there's no trees or even solid ground to extract resources from)
