For the many of you living outside Indiana, I'll note an update to the Creationism Bill story on which I based this LJ Idol entry. While the measure passed the state Senate, it has been shelved in the House.
I'm glad it was shelved overall, because it was just stupid. But I liked this quote:
“It looked to me to be buying a lawsuit when the state can ill afford it.” Yes, why do the stupid thing when you know it won't last anyway? And will cost $$?
If only more public officials kept that in mind...
He's taking the politically expedient path by not saying anything, but at least he's being fiscally prudent.
When Schwarzenegger was governor, he refused to spend state money to defend California's Prop 8 on appeals. All he said was that the state couldn't afford it, but you could easily read between the lines to see the implication of "Can't afford to defend a voter-initiative that at its heart is unconstitutional, and doomed to lose in the courts."
Either way, it was a refusal by the state to lend legitimacy to the movement. I'll take justice any way I can get it.
