Since this is the place for sharing personal stuff I thought I'd introduce everyone to the newest addition to our household, Oak the Cornsnake! He's two months old and is having fun exploring his new home, which we just set up for him today. He's got a lot more room and things to check out than in his previous home, a small plastic box with lots of ( Read more... )

Eee, he's pretty! All red and stripey! And he looks like he's wrapped around a coathanger, lol. :D

We were really surprised (and fascinated!) to find him coiling himself around the cord. He's been exploring his new home some more tonight but I didn't want to disturb him with the flash from the camera. (The reflection of the flash from the glass of the aquarium being another reason why I couldn't get a really good picture.)

After coming down off the wire he spent most of the evening curled up in his hiding rock which is over the heated section of the aquarium. He has another hiding place on the cool side too so he can chose what temperature he prefers.

Aaaw, he's kinda' cute! Will he get much bigger? How big is he? What does he eat?

Yup, he'll get a lot bigger! He's just a baby now. I think he's about a foot long, though it looks like he's grown another inch just since we brought him home. The ones that my brother in law (who bred this one) and nephew have are about 3 feet long and they aren't full grown. The size is determined in part by how much they're fed and how large an enclosure they have.

As for what he eats, right now he get what are called "pinkies" which are newborn rats or mice (I'm not sure which... I've just started getting into this) that we buy frozen and thaw just before feeding him. He gets one about every 6-7 days right now but will need more (or larger ones) as he gets bigger. (Hopefully that didn't gross anyone out too much!)

An old neighbour of mine used to breed the mice to feed to his massive python (and other reptiles he had) - she ended up being absolutely huge (green/brown/black I think she was)

They call refer to his breed color as Okeetee Albino although it's not really a true albino but merely a lack of black pigment. He'll be even more colorful as he gets older and the reds and oranges become more pronounced. He might even start showing some yellows too.
