I know a guy who LOVES LoTR, but hated the movies. Why? Because they left out Tom Bombadil.

Now, I don't mind the character. He's kind of neat. But even I can recognize that the time spent on Bombadil in the books had pretty much absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the plot. He didn't give them any useful gifts (like the elves did), he didn't give them any advice or teach them any skill or anything. He just ran around in the forest singing dippy songs. And it took a whole freaking chapter (or two, it's been a while since I read it), and if they'd included it in the movie, it would have taken up at least 30 minutes. For something that had NOTHING to do with the plot.

And he hated that they'd left Bombadil out so much that he didn't even finish watching the movie.

I just shake my head and wonder how he gets through life being disappointed by such stupid things all the time.

That is, I'm sorry, a terrible reason to not watch the movies. I was thrilled that Tom was left out precisely because he added nothing to the plot. I mean, the plot was huge and sprawling and lots of the best things didn't advance it, but Tom was a huge gaping hole in the advancement for me. Plus the singing was annoying XD

*snickers* Tom Bombadil - the Skipping Hippy of LOTRO. I didn't miss him in Fellowship either.
