I'm not gonna lie, work has been kind of bogus this week. This mostly stems from the fact that two people are on vacation and one gal got a different job, so we're essentially missing three people and the workload has also been especially large lately. There have also been some interpersonal issues going on between a few people, as well as some ( Read more... )

I don't know anything about Gosenzosama, Banbanzai!, but I'm really glad to have an excuse to finally get around to watching Aoi Bungaku and Kaiba. I'm sure Gokusen'll be enjoyable, but I'm not quite as pumped about that one, probably because I watched some of the dorama, and it just won't be the same without Nakama Yukie and MatsuJun. :(

Not having enough time to rewatch anime, and having a huge "to watch" pile to get through are more reasons why I've cut back on buying anime.

I see the logic in that and buying way more than I can watch is a perennial problem I have, but considering how unstable the industry is (or at least it seems) I'm trying to grab what I can while it's still available so I don't regret it later. A lot of what I buy is stuff that I've watched already anyway, so it's more a matter of giving back for what I've taken, and being able to loan things out, share them with MAS or share them with Anime Detour.

I suppose the one thing that bugs me about not having time to watch my DVDs though is that sometimes the animation is fixed for the DVD version, and it would be nice to see the improvements (I've seen some comparison screenshots of the TV broadcast and DVD versions of Claymore, and some of the improvements are very nice).

And just to completely contradict myself, I just ordered 5 more anime series. Never underestimate the draw of a good 25% off sale at DeepDiscount.com (sale ends tonight).
I ordered Beck (complete series S.A.V.E. edition) for only $15, School Rumble Seasons 1 & 2 + OVA for only $30 (I know some people at MAS don't care for it but the couple episodes I've seen were funny and you can't beat the price), FMA: Brotherhood part 1 on Blu-Ray for $28, Tsubasa seasons 1 & 2 + Movie on Blu-ray for only $50 (again can't beat the price), and Samurai Champloo on Blu-ray for $37.

Not sure what year Detour should break down and get a blu-ray home theater system for one of the rooms, but at least I will soon have some anime in blu-ray in my collection. Probably not until 2012 I'm thinking, we'll see what comes out in Blu-ray over the next few months.

There are very few anime I think I would need to have on Blu-ray, but that might change once more are created and released in native HD resolution. The clips I've seen of Brotherhood certainly make it seem like it it would be worth it in HD.

Yeah... I just bought a couple more DVD sets due to Rightstuf's Sentai/Section 23 sale (goes until the 28th). I picked up Blue Drop and The Skull Man for 23 dollars apiece. When there's a world apocalypse at least I'll have lots of anime to hold me over.

Plus I have to make sure I've got some stuff to loan to Anime Detour when the time comes ;)

I'm looking forward to summer MAS! I'm actually a surprised that Gokusen made its way in. I thought me and whoever suggested it would be the only people to vote for it, haha. Usually the art puts people off too much. But you're right, it's funny and Yankumi is a badass. :)

Looking forward to seeing Aoi Bungaku again, and finally getting around to the much recommended Kaiba! And as I mentioned, Gosenzosama, Banbanzai! looks amazing, ha.

Gosenzosama kind of blew my mind when I watched it this past winter. It starts off a bit slow but gets more and more funny and bizarre as it goes on. And there are musical numbers! I hope it isn't too much for the MAS audience, but then again, no one provided anything else from which to choose :P

Ano... Do you know if there are any ad-supported streams for any of these series? I feel like there was for Kaiba, but I'm not coming up with anything on Wikipedia or ANN...

Nope, none of them. Gokusen has a very inexpensive DVD release though (you can usually get for about 15 dollars on Rightstuf). Gosenzosama is 20 years old, and both Kaiba and Aoi Bungaku are obscure. I can help you find subs if you want them, though.

ETA: You might be thinking of Kaiji, which was streaming on Joost until the site went under :/

I managed to find subs on my own. As for obscurity, I figured since House of Five Leaves and Tatami Galaxy had ad-supported streams, then maybe...
ETA: Yeah, I must've been thinking of Kaiji. Damn series being one moji off...

Those are both noitaminA titles and Funimation has a deal with Fuji TV to stream all of those from this season onward, so I don't think it matters much how mainstream they are or not (which, honestly, is great for me).

Kaiba is a series that honestly isn't that difficult to grasp and isn't so "artsy" that a mainstream audience wouldn't enjoy it because, despite its odd look, it's a pretty basic sci-fi drama love-story that's complimented by a cool concept and creative animation, but because of its look I think companies haven't been anxious to touch it. Aoi Bungaku sounds too educational on paper, so I'm guessing that's why no one has bothered to bring it stateside :P

Kaiba's the show that introduced me to the works of Masaaki Yuasa, and I've been a fan ever since. If you end up liking Kaiba, it's worth checking out other things that he's directed, especially the Tatami Galaxy which is streaming on Funimation's video section at their website. So far I've found it to be very funny and jam-packed with the great unique art his series are known for.
