I have much the same shyness problem, though not to the same degree. I remember my first Minicon (way back in the Eighties, when*it* was the big convention) was very lonely between events, as I knew almost no one and the people who looked interesting were always talking to someone else. Good thing there were so many events and distractions going on! The next year people vaguely recognized me and said hi, and I managed to find ways to get into conversations.

My first Anime Detour might also have been lonely, but I didn't notice due to the other disastrous things going on around that.

Getting myself onto panels has helped a lot, as I am good at talking to crowds, and then people recognize me later and initiate conversations.

I think that participating in programming is probably going to be my saving grace in the future. I'm planning to try and set up a formal "meet and greet" thing for next year if possible, so that I can bring together anyone else in need of social interaction.
