Dr Who Fic and Fanmix

Title: Fireflies
Fandom: Dr Who
Pairing: Amy/River
Rating: PG
Word count: 850
A/N: For lovepb in the Dr Who Femslash fic exchange. Many thanks to the ever wonderful telperion_15 for the beta.

I felt guilty that this was so short (and has no plot and is just pure fluffy romance) so I made a fanmix too to make up for it. Enjoy!

The universe is a strange and wonderful thing. It is at once beautiful and terrifying, full of good and evil, of big and small, of old and new, and of the important and the insignificant. It is everything and nothing. But the only thing it will never ever be is meaningless.

No one knows these things better than Amelia Pond.

Thanks to the Doctor she has seen more of the universe than most people could ever dream of. She’s done things she’s proud of, and things she regrets. She’s saved the entire universe several times over. Her life has been an adventure on the grandest scale possible.

But the universe doesn’t know her name and the history books won’t remember her, no children will study her life at school and there will be no statues of her in parks across the galaxy.

She doesn’t mind that though. This whirlwind of a life has taught her that it’s the little things that really matter. She can barely remember the days in which she did fantastic things that changed the world.

Yes, now that she’s older it’s the little things she really remembers about her life. The little moments of connection, the little moments of happiness - the calm in the midst of all the chaos.

“What makes fireflies glow?”

The wonder in Amy’s face matches the childlike question but she doesn’t really care, she knows that River won’t laugh at her, or think she’s stupid for asking.

“Do you really want to know?” River answers, as she so often does, with a question.

Amy pauses to think about that for a moment and the firefly that sparked this wonder disappears into the night sky, oblivious to the women below who are discussing its rear end.

“No,” Amy finally decides, “I kind of like to think that it’s magic or something.”

“Then it’s magic,” River all but whispers with a smile.

Amy rolls on to her back to gaze up at the sky. She smiles as a song lyric drifts across her consciousness - ‘the sky resembles a back-lit canopy with holes punched in it’ - because it really does. The sky is a rich deep dark blue and there are so many stars it’s dizzying. Every so often she gazes at what she thinks is a star only to realise she’s looking at a firefly as it flitters away.

This is what she loves most about travelling with the Doctor.

They’re on a planet where the grass is bright purple and gives off heat, she can feel it softly warming her back (like a heated car seat, she thinks with a giggle). There’s no sun here either, but it doesn’t matter since the grass provides the warmth and the trees glow like billions of giant night-lights casting a permanent twilight hue over the planet.

People from all over the galaxy come to this planet to stargaze since there’s barely any light pollution, and Amy can see why. The view is utterly breathtaking. There are red stars and blue stars, shooting stars, asteroid belts and things Amy doesn’t even know the name of, all hanging overhead. Amy almost feels like she could reach out and touch them.

Amy hears a soft chuckle by her side and realises she actually has reached out towards the stars.

“It’s so beautiful,” is all Amy can think to say, and she can only manage it in a breathy whisper as the view overwhelms her completely and utterly.

“Indeed,” River replies, and Amy turns her head towards her companion to find River staring right at her.

Amy can’t help the big dumb grin from spreading across her face at that. It never ceases to amaze her how romantic River can be sometimes, given her tough ‘don’t-mess-with-me’ exterior.

The corners of River’s mouth twitch upwards in a smile and Amy knows that River has guessed exactly what she just thought about her.

“Come here,” Amy commands and River is happy to obey, leaning over and pressing their lips softly together.

Amy wraps her arms round River’s neck and pulls her down on top of her. ‘There’s no one watching’, she tells herself, ‘probably.’

River kisses her deeper then, her tongue exploring the familiar territory of Amy’s mouth, and Amy feels as though the fireflies fluttering around their heads have moved into her tummy. She hopes she’ll never lose this breathless ‘first-kiss’ feeling she gets every single time she kisses River.

Eventually River rolls off Amy to lie next to her, their fingers entwining as they gaze up at the stars.

Lost in the beauty and romance of the moment Amy finally feels able to say the words she has wanted to say for a while now, but never before found the right moment.

“I love you, River Song,” Amy whispers.

“I love you too, Amy Pond,” River replies, and Amy can hear the warm smile in her voice.

And if anyone were to ask, not that they ever do, but if they did; “moments like that”, Amy Pond would tell them, “are what make a life worth living”.

Starlight - Muse
The starlight
I will be chasing your starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms

My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to re-ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive

Cosmic Love - Florence and the Machine
I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

Starry Eyed (Live Acoustic Version) - Ellie Goulding
So we burst into colors, colors and carousels,
Fall head first like paper planes in playground games

Next thing we're touching
You look at me it's like you hit me with lightning
Ahhhh

Oh, everybody's starry-eyed
And everybody goes
Oh, everybody's starry-eyed
And my body goes

Warmer Climate - Snow Patrol
The universe just vanished out of sight
And all the stars collapsed behind the pitch black night
And I can barely see your face in front of mine
But it is knowing you are there that makes me fine

It's Beginning To Get To Me - Snow Patrol
And it's beginning to get to me
That I know more of the stars and sea
Than I do of what's in your head
Barely touching in our cold bed

Sleepyhead - Passion Pit
And you said
It was like fire around the brim
Burning solid
Burning thin the burning rim
Like stars burning holes right through the dark
Flicking fire like saltwater into my eyes
You were one inch from the edge of this bed
I drag you back a sleepyhead, sleepyhead

Haven't Met You Yet - Michael Buble
And I know someday that it'll all turn out
You'll make me work, so we can work to work it out
And I promise you, kid, that I give so much more than I get
I just haven't met you yet

Maybe - Ingrid Michaelson
'Cause maybe in the future you're gonna come back
You're gonna come back around
Maybe in the future you're gonna come back
You're gonna come back
Oh
The only way to really know is to really let it go
Maybe you're gonna come back
You're gonna come back
You're gonna come back to me
