Very interesting! I knew about Wallace and the Bruce family, but I had forgotten it had started with the death of a Scot Queen. So was Scotland then independent until whatever marriage it was that made James VI/I the cousin/heir of Elizabeth I?

It was independent officially until 1707 where the Scottish had to swear their allegiance to Queen Anne. James VI never offically brought the two crowns together, he was more of an absentee monarch who left Scotland to rule itself. Thats where you see the rise of the Covenanters who then get involved in the English Civil War whilst trying to maintain their independence against Charles Stuart :)
