I used this stuff that's in packaging that isn't English, so I'm not sure what it was. It's this air drying clay stuff. It was pretty tough so I had to use a bit of water on my fingers to make it malleable.
I took things like pens and whatnot to hatch the surface back and forth. Once it hardened, I painted it solid black so that the black seeped in to all the hatchmarks - then lightly went over with a dry-ish paintbrush with hardly any white on it in a sort of "scumble" manner.
