Awesome episode is awesome. That is all.
Summary: Cas and Dean have an EPIC BOND OF EPICNESS. Sam sleeps with prostitutes and does sit ups. Heaven is at war with . . . Heaven. Apparently, all angels other than the Archangels and Cas are smarmy bastards with a penchant for British accents and black suits. Raphael is mortal enemies with Cas, and Cas is frenemies with Balthazar. Sam is Sam. Or is he? Ummm. DEAN AND CAS 4 EVER. The End.

First: Let's get the best part out of the way first. CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS. I missed you baby. I did! I REALLY DID. Also, Dean and Cas are still as amazing as ever together. Seriously. Way to bring the slash back to Show.
- I'm not going to lie. When Cas showed up after Dean called for him once. I died of Squee. After Sam gave his whole speech in episode uno about how hard he called for Cas and he never showed, etc . . . I thought to myself, "Self. Wouldn't it be awesome and slashtastically amazing if Dean needed Cas and all he did was call him once and his little Love Angel!(tm) would show up with bells on!!!!!!!! Oh my little fangirl heart would burst out of joy if that happened. So many implications. It would be ahhhhhmaaaayzing!!!"
- Then we have Cas' explanation to Sam as to why he showed up. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Please, tell me we all noticed that even though Dean had a weird look when Cas mentioned their "more profound bond" . . . he didn't deny a word.
Second: Let's just take a moment to continue flailing in fangirly joy: !!!Bouncebouncebounce!!!
Third: Alright. Let's get down to the nitty gritty. Sam. Sam. Sam. Sam the cold, hard, super hunter. Sam who is taking pains to ensure that he has no connections - no bonds, be it with a prostitute or his own brother.
- It's interesting that he automatically assumed that Dean broke up with Lisa permanently. That he couldn't see a middle ground.
- His decisive and goal oriented reactions to everything are very off. His ease at torturing the child was, frankly, shocking. This is a Sam stripped down to his bare necessities. All of the emotional padding that makes us human and able to emphasize with each other is gone. Sam has a goal. He has turned himself into a weapon with no apparent weaknesses. The only question is - what is his goal? Are his intentions good?
Fourth: Dean is such an great juxtaposition to Sam. He is not a super!Hunter, or a killing machine - but his instincts are absolutely faultless. When you compare him to Sam he is softer and kinder . . . but also more balanced. He's still rough and tumble, but able to give advice to Ben and take on an angel without flinching. I feel as if he has managed to find a happy medium. It's odd to say, but for once Dean is the mentally healthy one.
Fifth: Cas is a fascinating character. I like that they have empowered him enough to make him kickass - but not so much that he is unbeatable. Again, its a happy middle ground between fallen!Cas and inhuman!Cas from his, "I am an Angel of the Lord," days. That said, his inhumanity was certainly a highlight of the episode. For the most part, though, I think some of his disconnect with the world is due to the fact that he has spent so long back in Heaven fighting the Civil War.
Sixth: The Civil War. Hmmmmmm. So, we have angels racing to start the Almost!Aggeddon again. This time though, they have free will. Which will make a difference in the end, I'm sure. We will see much more Angel on Angel action and it'll be interesting to see who ends up on what side. In this episode, Crowley Mach 2 Balthazar embodied what is both good and bad about free will. I liked his character, though he needs a deep cleansing facial.
Seventh: Okay. Time for my Random Conjecture Part Deux!(tm) I think that Sam escaped from Hell with Lucifer as his passenger - only he doesn't realize it. I think Luci is lying low back there in Sam's subconscious and we see him peak through in brief flashes of Sam's inhumanity, "Why yes! We should totally torture an innocent child!!!"
Additionally, his final conversation with Dean about not being damaged by Hell was incredibly off kilter -- but it might also be a clue as to what happened to him, or what didn't happen. Remember, Sam wasn't in your normal Hell, he was in Lucifer's cage and he wasn't alone in there. He had the company of two of the most powerful beings in creation, that was certainly a different experience than the one that Dean had. I wonder how much time passed down there and what really happened.
Eight: The line that was weighted with so much foreshadowing in this episode, I'm not sure how Cas got it off his tongue, "I expected more from my brothers." I'm calling it here and now, that is a major indicator of things to come. I'm pretty sure that Dean was echoing that sentiment in reference to his brother the whole episode.
Nine: CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS!! You fell and destroyed the ugly nu!Impala. LOLOLOL A veritable sign from Heaven!!
