Picnic
By: Bella Lumina
Fandom/Pairing: Grey's Anatomy, Derek/Meredith
Rating: PG
Canon: "Don't Stand So Close to Me"
Notes: This is for mga1999, who requested a 500-word fic with the prompt "Grey's Anatomy, Derek/Meredith, blackout."
Summary: “Please. I can be domestic when I need to be, you know.”

“Careful!” Meredith warned, reaching out to steady the makeshift table she’d constructed in Derek’s new living room. “You’ll knock over the candles.”

The wind whistled outside as he sidestepped the blanket that Meredith had placed on the unfinished floor. His new house, a little place tucked back in the woods, was still weeks away from being finished, but the power had been turned on a few days before, after the builders had finished the roof. He and Meredith had planned an inaugural dinner in the new place - “the closest to camping I ever want to get,” Meredith had declared as she surveyed the walls waiting for drywall and the plywood floors - but that had been temporarily sidelined when the power had gone out completely, both in the trailer and the new house.

He’d run out to the car to make some calls, trying to ensure that there wasn’t something wrong with the new wiring they’d run out to his property, and had been floored when he’d returned to Meredith’s surprise.

He sank to the floor and glanced around at the spread before him. “Dr. Grey, I am seriously impressed.”

She smirked. “Please. I can be domestic when I need to be, you know.”

“Now I do,” he laughed. “So, Grey, tell me what we’ve got here.”

She rose up on her knees and quirked an eyebrow at him. “Well, Dr. Shepherd, what you see in front of you is a feast fit for a king. It includes some of everything I was able to salvage in the fridge in the trailer after the power went out.”

“Ooh,” he said, smiling. “Such as?”

“I thought you’d never ask, doctor,” she flirted. Dramatically lifting the lid off one of the dishes, she purred, “Popsicles from last summer…”

“Nice.”

“Wait, wait, don’t get too excited yet,” she cautioned. She unveiled the next dish. “An ice cream sandwich that I found wedged between two old frozen pizzas!”

“Oh, wow,” he said. “I was still on the fence about staying, but that has totally convinced me.”

She made a scolding tsk sound. “I’m still saving the best for last, you know.”

“What could be better than Popsicles and an ice cream sandwich?”

She nodded. “I know it sounds impossible, but…” She grinned coyly as she produced a pint of ice cream from behind her back. “The rest of the cookies and cream ice cream I bought last weekend!”

He couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s like having my own personal chef, I swear.”

She had already peeled back the top of the ice cream and was digging around for the best chunks of cookie. “Hey!” he said. “What about the rest of this?”

“Derek, for Christ’s sake, it’s old Popsicles and a mushy ice cream sandwich,” she replied with a shrug. “I’m just going for the rational choice here.”

“You’re really something, you know it?” he asked, grabbing for a Popsicle and grinning.

She shrugged happily. “Just wait until you see what I found for dessert…”
