S1 & 2 Comments

So where the heck does he store all these clothes, right? That was by far the most popular debate at the Dean post. Bottomless duffel bags? Mary Poppins bags? It's just a tv show let's have a little suspension of belief here, people? Sure, all of those. But I also want to point out that these don't reflect the total number of clothes the boys own at one point in time. There are a lot of items that have been ruined and replaced between the Pilot and now. And it sure makes a heck of a lot of sense that the Winchesters would have a high clothing turn over rate given their line of work.

But even with both guys replacing clothes on a regular basis I'd say Sammy still flat out owns significantly more items than Dean. Conclusion? Sam's a wee bit of a clothes whore. And given that we can assume he wasn't trying to pick up while he was with Jessica, and given that we know he genuinely wasn't attempting to get laid after Jessica (and probably again now after Madison), we can also conclude that Sam's a clothes whore not for the opposite sex, but for himself. Which I kind of adore. A lot. But nine pairs of shoes, Sam? I don't even have that many shoes! Oh, and he's also more likely to change clothes more often than Dean during an episode.

Sam's style has also changed more than Deans since the pilot. In the very beginning he dressed much younger than he does now. Transitioning from some impressively realistic geeky little brother type clothes to much more trendy, fitted, MANLY stuff. I would guess that progression had more to do with cashing in on Jared's sex symbol potential than character development, but isn't it our duty as fans to over analyze that sort of thing from a character arc standpoint? I THINK IT IS.

Then there's the whole fire in the pilot which may or may not have destroyed everything Sam owned that wasn't with him at the time. It's not something that's addressed on the show, which is too bad because it could have been a novel way of reminding us of Sam's tragedy without shoving it down our throats.

For more on Sam's jackets please see this post. But I'd like to reiterate by BURNING LOVE for his blue jacket from episodes 11, 12 and 13.

The jeans section is far from complete because it's nearly impossible to tell one pair from another. But I'm satisfied that it visually represents Sam's demin preferences. Our Sammy's a darker wash boy, not that he doesn't have a few lighter pairs. He's all for a flared leg, or a boot cut at the very least, and fancy pockets and stitching are a go. But he's not a low-rise boy. While Dean's happy flashing the world with jeans that barely cover his ass, Sammy's midsection is fully protected (not that we don't catch the occasional blessed glimpse of bare midriff). I would also hazard a guess that Sam replaces torn jeans more often than Dean based on the fact that Sam's jeans are far less riddled with holes.

I would love to hear how people feel about that checkered tweed gem of a suit in Sam's wardrobe. Me? Not so much a fan. Especially with that shirt and tie he usually pairs it with. Given that his clothing is generally more trendy than Dean's, and that he's a law school boy, you'd think Sam would be a bit more suit savvy. Then again, being a sasquatch, and having grown up in a family of guys without a ton of money it's not unreasonable that Sam would have to make due with less than the best. BUT STILL. That checkered tweed suit? It's just... it's not good, Sam. It's really not. And now that you've acquired that ultra pretty navy pinstripe suit I'd say it's time to lose the fugly.

SO. MUCH. PLAID. I swear this whole thing started just because I wanted to see all of Sam's plaid in the same place at the same time.

So what do Sam's clothes tell us about him? At first glance Sammy looks more like a student than the hunters we've seen, which isn't at all surprising. The dark jeans, graphic tees, and general assortment of colours tell us that he's the younger, more-in-touch-with-normal-people-his-own-age brother. It also hints at a playful side and a creative streak. I would say Sam's style most serves to underlay the fact that hunting isn't what he intended to do with his life, and doesn't define him to the extent that it defines his brother.

S3 Comments

I'd say the stand out, most interesting outfit we saw Sam wear in S3 was the one from Mystery Spot after Dean dies. The shirt is so dark and plain. It's MUCH more of a Dean shirt.

In S1 we mostly (only, aside from the rental?) saw Sam in that dorky tweed suit, but it seems the further he gets away from law school the sharper his suiting gets because DAAAAMMMNNN that navy suit is FINE.

I have one major Sam wardrobe complaint for this season. REGARDING SOME SERIOUS EXCESSIVE LENGTH ISSUES. For example, unacceptable vs ACCEPTABLE. Unacceptable vs ACCEPTABLE. Unacceptable vs ACCEPTABLE. I'm thinking a midriff rule should be implemented. If Sam raises his arms above his head and no midriff is exposed the shirt is too long and should immediately be burned.

HELL YES, TO EVERY NEW PLAID. Especially that purple-ish one from Fresh Blood. And the blue and brown one from Sin City! Ugh. UGH.

The brown carharrt hoodie returned! LONG LIVE HOODIES ON SAM WINCHESTER.

However, the long-sleeved tee + short-sleeved polo combo was not in heavy rotation. *SIGH* He was sporting that classic Sam look at the end of Fresh Blood, but it was fairly well hidden under his giant green jacket. Fingers crossed for next year.

It's very possibly that I'm just making stuff up, but I swear Sam's clothes were darker this season. He seems to be getting away from the fun young graphic shirts and hoodies which gave him a college boy look, and which more clearly distinguished him from his brother. That makes sense given that Sam has fully accepted life as a hunter, and given that he even admitted to trying to be more like Dean.

Seriously, SERIOUSLY, can't wait to see how Sam's wardrobe changes next season to reflect what he's been through/is going through.

Additional Notes

Regarding the episode numbers given with the descriptions, my goal was to visually show the different clothes, not to document every single time they're worn. But as I was posting I decided it might be helpful to at least list a few sources in case, I don't know, people wanted to go have a look for themselves, or something. My point? Those lists are far from conclusive.

Thanks to in-a-dream, screencap paradise and supernatural caps for the screencaps. To helpwess and jascott for hand-holding, theorizing, and general encouragement. And to the folks at sam_support for help with the underwear section *g*. Thanks, guys, thanks!
