LASIK

May 09, 2005 17:03

So I'm mostly recovered from my LASIK experience. People ask me what it's like, and the most memorable detail is that, much like when the dentist is drilling at your teeth, when the doctor is laser-ing your eyes, YOU CAN SMELL THE BURNING.

Oh man, that is so awesome and scary and bizarre and I want it, but I don't.

It was a pretty bizarre experience. And my boyfriend got to watch the whole eye procedure magnified on a television screen. Very Discovery Channel. He said he didn't know that he could go through with it after watching mine. I think the tools they use to lift up and later replace the corneal flap are scarier than the laser--the tool looks like a dentist's pick, something I would never normally want near my eye.

Ewww, yeah, I've heard it smells like burning meat or something. I hope it worked well. As a contact lense wearer during allergy season, I would really like to try Lazik.

I thought the smell was more like burning hair. It's just kind of weird to think, "hmm, I can smell my eyes being lasered."

So far, I'm happy with it. My vision's still not 100%, but it's definitely cool not to have to worry about ripping contacts and stepping on my glasses--things I have done more than once each.

And it's really nice to be able to nap without being concerned about waking up with my contacts glued to my eyes or that my eyeballs are suffocating under my contacts.

Does it hurt? Now or then?

The only actual pain was some moderate burning on the way home. But, like I said, it wasn't too bad--comparable to getting a lot of chlorine or saltwater in your eyes after swimming. The LASIK procedure was uncomfortable--but more like pressure rather than pain.

I've had a few twinges of pain--if I let my eyes get too dry they burn a bit. And the light sensitivity makes my eyes feel a bit strained if I'm outside too much or look at the TV or computer too long.

But overall, less actual pain than a pelvic exam or even an ear piercing.
