The existence of evil is incompatible with the existence of God. Either God doesn't exist, or evil doesn't exist. Consider this paradox, called the "Epicurian Paradox":

1)God is omnipotent, or all-powerful.

2)God is benevolent, or all good.

3)God is omnipresent, or everywhere

4)God is omniscient, or all-knowing

5)Evil exists.

one of those statements have to be wrong, unless I'm missing something.
One should be beyond good and evil anyway ;)

i disagree. according to the bible...which those who believe in god also beleive in...God will not cause evil but he does allow Satan, the devil of evil, to cause evil, or bad things to happen.

Read about Job. He was a nearly perfect christian; he strictly followed God's laws and whatnot...

But his life was ruined and all this stuff went wrong. but not because God caused it...;)

but God allowed Satan to cause it. Why? To test his faithfulness.

Therefore: Evil and God can co-exist and without that balance, the world (at least in the mind of those beleiving in God) wouldn't work the way it does.

God gave Humans choice. that is why there is sin. Sin many times is evil. But God allows sin.

So God is not benevolent (all good) if he (she?!) allows satan to be a dick, right? Or is one still 'good' if one allows evil?. And the story about Job, very entertaining...but I still can not believe how God and Satan can make a wager on an innocent man's life. Isn't gambling a vice? So Job gets screwed over big time while God stands by idle, and then God wins his bet. Great resolution to that story :-P

The "God gave human's choice" comment has got me stumped though.
That seems to be counter-intuitive to "predestination" or "God has a plan for everyone." But I suppose not everyone believes that?

God is still benevolent if he allows evil. If God allowed no evil, we would all be like robots, without a choice. It's kinda like if someone were to find a magic lamp and wish that someone fell madly in love with them forever. Who would want someone to love them if they didn't do it out of their own free will? It's the same with God, he wants us to love him and obey him out of choice, not because we have to. Oh, and God and Satan didn't make a wager on Job's life. Not sure where that came from but it's not in the Bible. God simply allowed Satan to hurt Job because Satan told God that if he did, that Job would curse God. But God had enough faith in Job to kow he wouldn't curse him. And in the end, Job didn't curse God and God blessed Job and gave him twice as much of everything that Satan took away from him.
