Before posting the voting, I just would like to clear a few things concerning the themes allowed in this community. I don’t know why but a few people think that our challenges are strictly vintage (20th century era themes). I’m sorry if that wasn’t clear for everyone but I really got the feeling that it was since everyone always entered with perfectly acceptable entries.
Our community’s themes can be divided into three main categories detailed in the table below. Of course, many themes can be placed in more than one category.
The category that is most confusing is the vintage one. It is really to be interpreted in its broadest meaning: anything that originates, looks like or is inspired by a previous era. It means for example that clearly vintage inspired photoshoots of contemporary singers or actresses like Taylor Swift are welcome.
I also want to stress that there is no restriction as to the subject of your icons, you can icon people, animals, landscapes, stock photography, fashion plates or even make text only icons.
I think the best rule to keep in mind is that your icons should not look contemporary or everyday-like. The goal I guess is to take us to other places and times. Very strict and restrained challenges would not be very fun in my opinion, so feel free to be creative. If you have any hesitation, you are of course free to ask and we can discuss it without a problem.
1. costume and history
in this category belong all the period dramas set in a realistic historical era, from Ancient History to the sixties. But also any activity involving an interpretation in a costume like ballet.
examples: “Marie-Antoinette”, “Pride and Prejudice”, “Downton Abbey” but also “Black Swan”, even though contemporary, involves stage costumes.
2. fantasy, fantastic or science-fiction
any production that takes place in an imagined place and time would count here. Supernatural and magical themes would also belong to this category.
examples: “Harry Potter”, “Game of Thrones” or “Fringe”
3. vintage and Old Hollywood
any movie, model, actor or actress that belongs to the Silver Screen Classics era (roughly 20’-60’) or anything that is strongly and evidently inspired by that period.
examples: Marilyn Monroe, “Mad Men” or Dita von Teese
what would not be accepted
anything that is blatantly “present” and “realistic”, anything “nowadays”
examples: celebrities candids, “Love Actually” or “Pretty Little Liars”
