You'd be surprised. Every horrible thing that preppy kids are into today was once an item of some cultural value to society. Take my Sperries for example. Back in 9th grade, I could freely wear them without being associated with the J. Crew demographic. Alas, now they are a symbol of everything I fight against.
No, Nick, I'm afraid Sperries have always been a sign of the rich and snotty. Maybe not in the 'boro, since there isn't nearly the plethora of rich snots there as here, but boat shoes = people rich enough to have special shoes for their boats = snotty. It's been that way since popped collars, and perhaps even before.
