As a water treatment guy, I feel obliged to talk about the hexavalent chromium story. A friend of mine asked me about it, and I emailed him this reply:

Gonna peak out of obscurity for a moment here:

Just in case I'm a nutter and am very concerned about contamination of this sort, would a home water filter (like Britta, etc.) be of any use?

If you want to be thorough on your water in general, an ion exchange one is state of the art, reverse osmosis would be second. If you went this route, though, it should be noted that you have to keep up on the maintenance. I have a feeling many more people get sick from forgetting about replacing things than are saved from the issues they resolve ( ... )
