No actual smoke escaped from the dryer. However, the drum has stopped turning and there was a definite smell of something burning ( Read more... )

Could be the belt broke. My dryer did that a few years back. Bought the belt cheap from ebay and I fixed it myself.

Indeed, mine had the same symptoms - including the smell - when the belt broke. I got a new belt from Sears for not much money and replaced it myself. Worked great until I decided to get a new washer/dryer last year.
