We've got our internet and landline through westnet (who have now been bought out by iinet the BASTARDS, but they assure us nothing will change - I'm crossing my fingers). It means we never have to interact with telstra, which is only a good thing, and westnet's great.
Talk to Malcolm about it. He knows about these things.
I don't really want to get in to it, as it will make calm and peaceful Mo mad, but basically we were without internet for around three months, and without phone (also through iinet) for intermittent periods through that, so we had to call them via mobile which became expensive when you are on hold for 20 minutes at a time.
Supposedly once you have made 3 "touches" with them, they were supposed to fast track your problem. Upon looking on our complaints, it was found we had over 25 "touches".
There were many other issues, but it would take far to long to voice them here, and already calm and placid mo is feeling the anger rise.
This was all whilst I was living in Sydney though, and I've been back for a year, so I'm sure they must have lifted their game since then, as there is no possible way they could have gotten worse.
Also, yes, we were idiots to not have changed companies during that time. I am willing to admit that.
I'm will Hellstra - I thought we'd gotten an awesome deal when we bundled all our mobiles, landline & unlimited broandband (admittedly it WAS cheap) - however, when they cut off the CDMA & moved onto Next G network, or whatever the fuck they did, it seems to have done something to our internet too, as one of the Telstra towers that were out this way have since been shut down (or something to that effect). We get hellish speeds (can't download jackshit) & it constantly drops out. But we're trapped in a contract for another 3 months - so boohoo. Fucking Telstra. iiNet FTW, dude.
I've been with iiNet and/or Amnet for the past 5-6 years, and have had zero problems with either provider.
Really, no matter who you ask here you're going to get "x is great, don't go with y, they dicked me around" - where you can substitute ANY ISP for x/y.
A wiser man than me once compared running an ISP/telco to a bucket with tiny holes in it, with your customer base being sand stored in said bucket. You can try and catch as many of the grains that fall through the bottom and put them back in to the bucket, but ultimately you're not going to be able to catch them all.
You've just got to hope that regardless of who you pick - if you fall through one of those holes you're one of the grains they can catch. Some of the stuff I've seen while working in the industry breaks my brain.

I admit, I would die without the internet for 3 months.
