The Distance Between Eternity 5/6

When the whirr of the TARDIS fills up the room, it’s light illuminating the dark Blaine swears he’s never heard a better sound in his entire lifetime.

“I knew he’d come back” Blaine says grinning from ear to ear as he fist-pumps the air “I told you!”

“He did it!” Adelayo yells, ecstatic.

Sam is the first to stick his head out the door “Just in time” he says, smiling broadly “Come on, get in!”

“You can’t have much air left” The Doctor says, poking his head out too “Quick, no time to waste!”

“No we can’t” Alair says looking straight at Delise as the room continues to shake even more violently.

“I don’t see any other alternative Muscato” Delise says.

“No but we can’t” Alair says, green eyes wide “I’ve got it, we can’t go now!”

“Got what Alair” The Doctor asks cautiously “You’ve got no machinery or power.”

“It” Alair insists.

“We’ve only got ten more minutes of air left Alair” Emil replies “There’s no time for being cryptic.”

“I’ve got to finish” Alair says “We have to stay, trust me.”

“We can’t leave her” Maret says.

“She’s my best friend” Adelayo says “I’m staying if she is.”

“She’s gone wrong, Addy” Blaine pleads “Whatever it is down there it’s got her.”

“It’s got her and it wants you too” The Doctor says.

“Please” is all Blaine says “Please trust us.”

Delise shakes her head “We can’t leave her.”

“How do we know it’s not you three. Everything was fine until you lot showed up” says Ulysses “Why should we trust you when we’ve lived and worked with Alair for two years now.”

“I wouldn’t go that far” Adelayo says “Their good people Ulysses.”

“We can’t know that for sure” Delise says.

“We don’t know anything for sure” Maret interjects.

“I do” Alair says “I know everything now, trust me, I can save us from those three.”

“She can’t” The Doctor says, voice rising “She’s going to send you to your deaths.”

“She’d never” begs Adelayo.

“It’s not her anymore” Sam says “It’s the thing, the thing wants you dead.”

“You have to come now” Blaine screams as he himself runs inside the TARDIS.

“We’ve got to go” The Doctor says “There’s going to be a cave in, if we don’t go now we’ll die with them” he turns and walks over to the console pulling the lever and pushing buttons “I’m sorry” he whispers to himself.

Blaine keeps the door open as Sam steps back, Blaine holds on to the doorframe to keep from falling out but keeps one hand outstretched.

Please he thinks, please, please, please.

And he feels the weight of another hand in his own, he grips the other person’s fingers pulling them inside the TARDIS hoping for it to be anyone but Alair. When he opens his eyes he is met with Adelayo’s ocean-blues.

“What was all that about blind faith again” she says, voice shaking.

“I’m sorry” The Doctor says to her “I really am.”

“It’s not your fault they didn’t trust you” she says “Who were they supposed to believe over you and Alair.”

“But Alair’s your best friend” Blaine says “How come you didn’t trust her over us?”

“Because like you said” Adelayo answers, gasping for breath a little from the shock “I know her better than anyone else and that wasn’t her.”

The Doctor only nods solemnly “I’m sorry we couldn’t save your Ood either.”

“We wasted all our time trying to convince the crew” Adelayo says, a tear falls down the slope of her cheek as she blinks “They probably would’ve wanted it that way.”

“We’re still sorry” Blaine says and pulls her into a hug.

“We never even knew what it was” Sam says “Or how it even got Alair”

“Sometimes you don’t get the answers to the whys and hows of the universe” The Doctor says “I wish we did, but not all things get wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end.”

The Doctor turns to Blaine and whispers in his ear “You’re going to love who she becomes” he points to Adelayo “Adelayo Hartley - swashbuckling guerrilla fighter on the front line for equality. When I drop her back, whenever she so chooses she’s going to form a little organisation called Friends of the Ood - maybe you’ve heard of it? She’s going to be the next Julian Assange, there won’t be a soul in the human empire that doesn’t know her name.”

“No way!” is all Blaine can say, he’s just met the future founder of Friends of the Ood he wants to shake her hand but, you know, spoilers.

Blaine’s phone rings mid-flight, Blaine doesn’t get all that many calls now that he and Kurt aren’t together anymore so he has to admit he’s a little bit startled by it.

Incoming call - Kurt Hummel. Shit. Blaine doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. But he could never deny Kurt anything, especially not something as everyday as a phone call.

“Hello?”

“Hey, can you hear me it’s kinda loud out here?”

“Yeah, I can hear you.”

“Have you guys performed yet?”

“Oh. Is it Thanksgiving? Shit. Kurt, I just want you to know that no matter-“

“It’s Thanksgiving. Are you with The Doctor? Just let me talk for a second, okay, look you’ve said you’re sorry a million times. And... I believe you. I’m trying to forgive you but... I’m just not there yet. But it’s Thanksgiving, well it is for me anyway, and I miss you like crazy and I can’t stand not talking to you even though I’m mad at you... cause you’re still my best friend.”

“You’re mine too... I am with The Doctor I just needed to...”

“No, I get it. I would if I could too... When you come back we need to talk about this, as friends. I’m coming back for Christmas to see my Dad? We can have a mature heart to heart then.”

“So you really want to see me? At Christmas?”

“Yeah... Unless you get killed on another whirlwind dangerous adventure with The Doctor that is...”

“Happy Thanksgiving, Kurt... Kurt, I love you so much.”

“I love you too.”

Blaine can’t stop the sobs that escape his chest as Kurt disconnects the call, happiness and sadness all swirl through his chest simultaneously and it’s too much.

The Doctor comes over and pulls Blaine into a tight hug “He’ll get there one day Blaine, he’ll get there” he whispers as Blaine cries into his shoulder "I promise."
