Happy Valentine's Day!

Feb 14, 2012 02:08

Just a short, humorous little something. Please enjoy it, and have a wonderful V-Day! :3

Gwen had an unusually “glittery” sort of aura around her as they all sat down for lunch, and Kevin didn’t think it had anything to do with her powers. Ben didn’t seem to notice it, and Kevin did his best to ignore it. The burgers this place served were delicious and therefore deserved his attention far more than whatever was making Gwen almost visibly sparkly with energy.

Sooner or later, of course, burger-eating was interrupted by The Question.

“So…what are you guys planning to do tomorrow?”

Ben and Kevin looked at each other. It would have seemed like a fairly normal question if not for the sly way it was asked and the subtle eyebrow-raise that accompanied it. Suddenly both boys had the feeling that if they answered wrong, they would leave Gwen very disappointed.

After a quick mental consultation, Kevin decided to forge ahead first.

He shrugged. “I dunno. I’ve got an early shift at the auto shop; after that I thought I’d just chill at home with a pizza.”

“And I’ve got a press thing at two-thirty. Why?” Ben looked at his cousin as though she’d just contracted an incredibly bizarre virus, and she shortly turned the same look on him.

“Pizza? Press thing? Why?” Gwen sputtered. “Do you guys not know what tomorrow is?”

“Uh…” Kevin scratched his head. “Tuesday?”

“Tuesday?”

“That’s wrong? Huh. Guess I need a new calendar.”

“Guys!” Gwen sighed in such frustration that Ben and Kevin saw fit to put their food down. They were in for a lecture. “Guys,” Gwen repeated, “tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. You’re not doing anything, you know, together? As a couple?”

Oh. Valentine’s Day. That explained why Gwen had an expression like a volcano had just erupted nearby.

“Come to think of it,” Ben said after a moment, “we never did make any plans for Valentine’s Day.”

“We could see a movie after your thing,” Kevin said. “I think the new Sumo Slammers is playing around four.”

“Works for me.”

Both boys nodded in agreement and, with the issue solved, resumed eating. Gwen continued to stare at the two of them in utter disbelief, her “glittery” aura effectively snuffed out like a candle.

“You guys ruin all my fun.”

“What d’you want us to say?” Ben asked through a mouthful of burger. “Candlelight dinner? Heart-shaped boxes of chocolate and sexy lingerie?”

“There’s sexy lingerie? I wouldn’t say no to that.”

“Not happening, Kevin.”

Gwen sighed again, more heavily this time. “No, not like that, really. Well, maybe a little. I was just expecting something…a little more romantic. But you two hadn’t even thought about it at all! You’re really not any fun at all.”

“Well, it’s not like it’s any of your business what we do in private,” Kevin said, throwing her a disgruntled look.

“Excuse me for being a little invested. I have no love life at the moment, so I have to live vicariously through you two. Indulge me.”

Kevin sighed. “Tell you what. You can pick out our Valentine’s Day cards before we leave the mall. Invested enough for you?”

Gwen considered this. It seemed, after a few thoughtful sips of cherry soda, that she deemed this acceptable. “Fine,” was all she said.

The three finished their lunch, finally, after all that. Gwen’s mood had improved a bit from Kevin’s suggestion, but it wasn’t as annoyingly eager as before, so Kevin was satisfied, too. Ben’s mood hadn’t actually changed at all throughout the entire ordeal. In fact, Kevin was starting to wonder if he’d even paid attention to what was happening. Even as they left the mall (Gwen having selected the sappiest-looking cards she could find) and drove home, he got the impression that Ben was just floating along and ignoring everything around him.

But of course, Ben was usually like that. And these days, Kevin was always suspicious of that oblivious attitude.

He switched off the car’s engine just outside of Ben’s house and gave his boyfriend a quick, assessing glance.

“If you wanna do something, you know, a little more…for Valentine’s Day, we can think of something.” Ben gave him a curious look. Kevin suddenly became very interested in a tiny smudge on his windshield. “Uh…I mean, I’m not totally helpless in the kitchen. I could make spaghetti?”

In the embarrassment-induced silence, Kevin became increasingly irritated at Gwen for bringing up Valentine’s Day in the first place. Romantic gestures with her had been floundering at best, but that was easier because she’d been so patient with him. Or…maybe with Ben, it was harder because he really wanted to make it work. Besides, he’d never dated a guy before. So even thinking about this romantic stuff was causing too much trouble.

Ben laughed, and Kevin wasn’t sure whether that should make him feel better or just more embarrassed. “Really, I’d be just as happy chilling with you and that pizza you mentioned. After the movie, that is. Nothing says ‘love’ to me like Sumo Slammers Two.”

Kevin couldn’t help laughing, too. “So you’re holdin’ me to it, huh?”

“Yep.” Ben smiled.

Maybe Valentine’s Day didn’t have to be as complicated as he’d thought. At least not where Ben was concerned, and that was all that really mattered.

“Guess I’ll pick you up tomorrow, then?”

Ben nodded, and then decided to give Kevin a parting kiss before leaving the car.

“See you tomorrow, Valentine.”

Kevin snorted. “Yeah, whatever, sweetie-pie. Hey, since we're being romantic, any chance I'll see you in that sexy lingerie?”

“Not a chance, Kev.”

Well, a guy could dream.
