I’m supposed to be writing a paper right now but I always find something more important to do like writing this message to you. I’ve gone back and forth between angry and sad at how divided the country is currently. I hope with the end of the election, we can move past that division.
A lot of people talk about how “the next president” of the United States needs to bring the country back together. I don’t think a president is capable of doing it. The U.S. has given the torch to Senator Obama who will make all executive decisions.. and the Democrats control the congress, we will see change… whether for the better or worse, that remains to be seen. Everyone has their opinions on what will happen, but you can’t know until it happens. However as far as our county’s unity, it’s not up to him it’s up to us.
I worry quite a bit about what’s going to happen to our country if we remain as divided as we are now. A lot of people blame President Bush for the division and I am inclined to disagree with them. Indeed it started in 2000 with the hard fought election that went weeks after the election. The President got off on a bad foot. He made quite a few bad decisions, but those bad decisions don’t have to divide the country.
It starts with personal attacks from people… it started softly with “George Bush is stupid,” which isn’t true. He did go to Yale and Harvard and has done an extraordinarily tough job. Like it or not… he is NOT stupid. After that it fell into calling anyone who supported him stupid. That condescending and elitist attitude pulls everyone apart.
This continued into McCain, who doesn’t have the speaking problem and has done a great deal of service to the country. Suddenly HE is stupid and so is anyone who supports him. This isn’t the opinion of everyone, but it is an opinion of a lot of people. I’ve heard stuff like “I don’t understand how anyone can support McCain!”
McCain supporters did the same thing… Accusations that Obama is ACTUALLY a terrorist is ludicrous. “Look at his middle name it’s actually Hussein.. he must be a Muslim.” There have been more accusations from the right calling him un-American and un-patriotic… very unnecessary and very divisive.
Remember these things:
1. Most things regarding politics are opinions.. respect other people’s opinions.
2. Disagreeing with someone is okay… but personal attacks are unproductive
3. Presidential elections come around every 4 years…. After the election accept it if you lost… don’t continue fighting the battle you lost
4. Be active.. follow the issues and write to your elected officials about important issues, they work for you.
5. Don’t ever.. EVER listen to a negative campaign ad.
