Where to go?

Has anyone been to Bali? Or, Singapore? I am so undecided on where to go for a vacation. I'm just as undecided on whether to even go on vacation. The smart thing would probably be to keep hoarding money. But, what fun is that? Maybe, we should just skip going somewhere in May and go during the August break between summer school and the fall ( Read more... )

I've been to Singapore... only for a few hours on a long layover though. If I had more time there I may have sought out what kind of interesting things there are to do there, but I didn't get the impression that it was worth going to as your ultimate destination.

Singapore = Asia for Beginners. Very clean, neat, organised and efficient, but totally sterile and not much to do in the way of tourism (yes I have been there).

Bali. I've never been to Bali. But all the white trash/bogans from Australia head there (football players and their hairdresser wives). It's very tacky and touristy now.

Bali is beautiful, absolutely stunningly beautiful. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Waking early, to the scent of incense burning at each household shrine. A faint smell of ash in the air at all times. Green like you can't imagine. Skies bluer than blue. Black sand beaches, and music that is so alien to western ears.

Avoid Kuta and Denpasar like the plague. Unless you just want the usual beachfront vacation.

Go to Besakih. Watch the Ramayana in the royal palace at Ubud. Go to the black sand beaches of Singaraja.

If you have the time, take the ferry to Lombok.
Take a plane over to Java, and visit Borobodur and Prambanan.

Bali, if you let it, is life changing. At least, it was for me.

Avoid the usual touristy places where the Aussie accent can be heard.

Ubud, Singaraja and Lombok is totally non American. You will experience something unique, some say spiritual, I'm completely refreshed and detoxed after a week.

I laughed at your comment about avoiding places with the Aussie accent!

As you can tell, I'm all confused as to where to go for our holiday. Thanks for the tips.

I just had an idea. You're governed by when Rochus has holidays as to when and how long. On the asumption that some holidays are longer than others what about saving your pennies and having a supa-doopa holiday twice a year on the longest breaks you can get?

That way each of you can pick somewhere to go each year if you can't agree on a place. If the flight is more than five hours slip some valium into Rochus pizza topping a few hours before boarding.

Phil went to Singapore and the verdict was that it was a big bland westernised city that had a few Asian influences but nothing compared to somewhere like Tokyo. He has no desire to go back.

Everyone I know who has been to Bali has raved about it.

Rochus was already starting to complain about the length of flights. So, I'll probably wait a couple weeks before figuring out where I want to go. I guess I better pick something close or deal with his wrath.

If the exchange rate keeps moving in the direction it is, I'm leaning toward going to Europe. But, again, Rochus was complaining about the length of the flight. Of course, after the fact, he's glad he's gone. But, it's the suffering during the flight he (nor I) want to deal with.

I saw a package for Singapore and Bali. That's why I was asking specifically about the two.

Singapore isn't exactly friendly to the gays, I'd stay away.
