Sometimes, people tell me random things and then stories happen. Like that time a friend told me to write a Doctor Who stapler monster. Stuff like that

“I know,” he says. “I know not to get caught.”
“Knowing not to and knowing how not to aren’t exactly the same thing, Freckles.”
He huffs.
Is it weird that I love it almost the most when the Doctor does things like huff and puff and pretend affront at things Rose says? Because I almost do. It's almost the most adorable thing in the world. I MEAN FRECKLES LOL SORRY.
Not taking his eyes off the telly, he rolls up the loose sleeve of the jimjams and shows her his arm. The marks are surgical, not oral, and that buzzing is back in her ears.
“What happened?” she asks, barely a breath.
He shrugs like it doesn’t matter.
She touches his arm, doesn’t know what to do.
He turns his arm over, catches her hand in his.
They watch the next episode like that.

Yeah, he has a past. Oh boy, does he have a past. Because, y'know, tragic past is kinda obligatory for AU New Who. At least it is with me. We'll get to that later. I wanted to make sure we had a mention of it before the end of this arc, though, because there's a mention earlier on of Rose wondering how old he might be and then touching on the whole force-grown Flesh thing (like Chip, the force-grown clone of New Earth). In her mind, Freckles just happened one day. He was tested at the factory, rejected due to the pressure issues, and then he wound up at the shop where Jackie bought him. He's childlike and curious. He's so very sweet. Her affection for him is initially based on this very shallow image, reflected by her choice of reading material for him. He looks like an adult, but he's just this big kid, right

She starts yelling. She doesn’t even know what words she’s using, she just starts yelling and shouting because she is so angry and he only sits there. He sits there, twisted around to stare at her with such wide, falsely innocent eyes and he doesn’t even stop eating his weird orange veg stick thing, making crunching noises at her like the sound of broken bones and trampled hearts.
OH ROSE. OH. OH ROSE.
I almost knew he wouldn't have left, that if I'd been there and just looked over into the living room at the daytime soaps he'd be there munching away at something but even still I got the EXACT SAME JOLT as she did when he wasn't in that room and OMG SHE LOVES HIM SO MUCH ALREADY YOU WON'T CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.
especially since it's been days since I've read the whole of arc 1 even though i am only just now commenting because i'm horrible so lol i am in the know

Very, very pleased to hear that. Because the point isn't whether he actually would here, it's whether Rose believes he might and how insanely terrifying it is to her.
OMG SHE LOVES HIM SO MUCH ALREADY YOU WON'T CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.
Pretty sure I couldn't if I tried.
Thing is, this is a character who has been brought up to believe that someone like Freckles isn't even a someone. The entire thing is set off because she's very much a pet-person and a compassionate person in general. That opened up the door and he crammed himself in. This is her first moment of realizing extreme concern for him. That the concern is actually largely unwarranted here just throws her off so completely. For him to be the calm, reasonable one is just... what? What's going on?

“Do you enjoy doing that?” she asks him one day, cheek by his knee, watching him type. He’s not very comfortable, as far as pillows go, but neither of them have complained about it so far. “The translating, I mean

*headdesk* Evidently a year of study abroad was not enough to teach me that. I'm still crazy confused at the British educational system, which was not a fun feeling to have while in it.
Consider the wish list bit deleted and the above exchange edited to:
“The job in the shop’s the best I got,” she says.
“Why?”
She goes quiet. Shrugs, her shoulders up against his leg. “Not qualified for much else.”

That works :)
And, believe me, the English (not British, as the Scottish system is entirely different again) education system does take some understanding. It took me years, after I moved to England to work in the university system to get my head around it!

There are...no words for how hard and fast my heart beat throughout all of this. Just.
The Kennels. God. God. And Rose, and group feeding, and Cassandra ugh and he is in there all alone THEY'RE GOING TO TRY AND DRUG THEM WHEN ARE THEY MOVING OUT WHEN OH GOD.
He smiles. It's a sight she hasn't seen in ages.
She presses their foreheads together, running her fingertips through his beard. She can feel him smile wider.
"Everyone's looking," he warns, warm and chiding.
"Get used to it," she warns right back.
They grin into each other's faces, so very close and still so very far.
And somehow, this was the worst. Because it's them, Freckles and Rose, and this moment should not be happening where it's happening, it should be happening on some hill looking over Cardiff at sunset.
anything I already do doctor/rose gone crazy AU

He stops. Considers.
Keeps right on scratching the beard.
“Hair doesn’t work that way,” he tells her.
“Okay, just.... Be patient, yeah?”
A flash of white teeth through brown fuzz. “Oh, I know how to wait, Rose. Don’t you worry about me.”
“Wish October would get here already,” she says, says it yet again.
“Rose the uni student,” he muses. “You’ll be brilliant.”
“I’ll be a mess.”
He gives her a pointed look, then scratches at his beard.
She laughs. Reaching out, she scratches it for him, both hands along his cheeks and chin.
His fingers fall from his face, hold her elbow. Eyes happily shut, he hums.
“We’ll be messes together,” they say in unison, then laugh.
“But really,” Mickey says.
“No,” she says. “I’ll visit, all right?”
“What’s wrong with a school in London?” He’s accepted it’s happening, they’ve that much at least.
“What’s wrong with wanting to go somewhere else?” she asks.
“Yeah, but... Cardiff.”
“It’s a good business programme.”
