I'm so glad Sherlock is back! Great world-building this chapter, interesting to find out more about the laguz. I'm wondering whether Sherlock might actually be one of them with his tail removed, and whether there is a plot afoot between him and the laguz, but I will have to wait and see. I'm not sure I understood that bit with Richard - was it an 'we're not a couple' moment in reference to John thinking Richard and Edmund were together or was John acknowledging immediately that he and Sherlock are more than just brothers in arms? Either way John acknowledges there's more going on - yay!

Thanks! The exchange with Richard was meant to be a little ambiguous about the exact degree or type of "together," but yeah, there's some degree of together.

That is horrific, on both sides of the war, though you make us see the reasons why they will see and act that way. The captivity comment really reinforces what Sherlock said about slavery. And the racism makes sense - of course you have to deny the personhood of laguz, otherwise how can you justify your actions?

I'm glad Sherlock's alive, though he's in for a grilling. Methinks the bishop smells some sort of rat...

Pretty much that. The more animalistic characteristics just give them fuel to add to that fire.

Nope, no rat laguz. :P

I liked the tail-cutting atrocity bit and John's reaction. Liked your ironic touch, "a priest should be seen free of blood". You put in a ton of detail in this chapter. I felt that, at times, the narrative took a back seat and the story lost a bit of momentum. Loved that moment near the end with John unable to stop talking about Sherlock, especially given John's state of mind during the long march home. No idea what Sherlock was up to. Was very clear that his story was a manipulation, but to what end I do not know. Staying tuned!

Thanks! The balance definitely erred on the side of detail here. The attempt was to show the drudgery that is life without Sherlock. So... dunno the effectiveness there, but some of the details were necessary.

Sherlock's back! *dances* Good job portraying how completely John's life changes with Sherlock's presence, from a dim almost absent existence, to an urgent and meaningful one.
