This is fascinating - the social mores and beliefs interwoven here especially fascinating.

I love the amount of detail you put into these chapters; I can actually feel the darkness underground, the stuffiness of the boxes, the fear of those on the premises. You paint pictures so well - sights, sounds, smells, textures.

”Mr Holmes writes back promptly. His is the fluid, effortless style of a man who has never had to force his right hand and neglect his left.

That was a lovely touch; so very “Victorian” and letting us see that John has perhaps suffered such indignities in his past without being able to challenge them.

”He plays the prima donna so well that it would be a shame not to indulge him.”

What a wonderful description - and so accurate!

We’ve moved on a little, but given the “big sulk” I’m surprised John’s even ventured back now. It was thrilling seeing him discover the mask and wonder whether to hold it against his face - it shows how much respect he has, that he didn’t . . .

Without thinking to challenge them, really.

Sometimes, those moments look smaller in hindsight or in loneliness. Also: John.

I'm as breathlessly enchanted as John is. :D
