I have no plans for spring break, just work, but IT WILL BE SO NICE not to have class for a whole week, I have so much freaking reading to catch up on. Also an essay to write woo :|
Media week in review: spoilers for:
DC stuff con't
So this week I read that not only do we have Morrison killing off Damian (my babyyy omfg so this just REALLY HIT ME LAST NIGHT and I had a small breakdown maybe? Because I know they're going to bring Damian back, but I know they're going to bring him back brainwashed and evil and like. That is so, just, uuuuugh, I cannot, Damian's entire story arc has been beautifully done with him slowly growing and moving away from his violent past to be a better person, and they are just going to ERASE ALL OF THAT and I know they are and my baby will be gone and I HATE EVERYTHING OKAY. Fucking DC man.)
Ahem.
Lobdell is apparently also doing a possession arc that basically has Tim, who is notoriously chaste, going around possessed by something and sexing with everyone and just, it's a total... it would be disgusting and outright rape regardless of the character, but with Tim in particular it's just wrong on every possible level. I have a lot of totally legitimate rage that the first time we get Tim ~having sex (or heavily implied to have had sex) he is possessed and it is nonconsensual for all parties involved and >:(
DC I am so fucking done with you.
Age of Ultron #1
I am really, really enjoying this so far? And as like three of you know, I started to write an Ultron dystopian fic set in 616 some months ago and kind of got too busy with real life, but BASICALLY MARVEL IS WRITING MY FANFIC FOR ME AWW YISS (probably minus the Sam/Steve but whatevs I can work that in myself). So far it has Clint being adorable and flawless and wonderful and I am really, really liking the direction they're taking this, even if I know it will CUT OPEN MY HEART AND DESTROY ALL MY FEELS, man, I can already tell it's going to be brutal. My guess would be that we'll get a role-call of already-dead characters next issue and I will probably cry.
I loved loved looooved Clint being all I WILL LEAVE AND RESCUE OUR CAPTURED FRIENDS YOU CAN'T STOP ME I will not leave anyone behind. Even if it was off-screen. Because Cliiiiiiiint.
So on the one hand, we have DC, FUCKING UP EVERYTHING, and on the other, we have Marvel, writing my stories for me ahahah GUESS WHICH ONE I LIKE BETTER RN???
Avengers #7
I feel like I still just don't know? I mean I'm intrigued but nothing ~new or particularly exciting is happening here, just another Big Bad that has ~all the power ever that they have to defeat ~against all odds, and I feel like they haven't even added any interesting twists to draw the reader in. Plus, I am so over the ~sad lonely ignored kid gains powers and TAKES HIS REEVEEEENGE~ storyline I cain't.
TBH I think this is the story of story that I should be waiting for the trade paperback with rather than buying it issue by issue, and that's probably what I'll start doing now. Eeeeh.
The Walking Dead 3x12
omfg Michooooonne. That is about the extend of my feels. MICHONNE IS MY PRECIOUS RAINBOW CAT. There was a lot going on in this episode and I just... really liked that they went back and met dude from the beginning again? Like, it was more realistic when that loose end was just left hanging, and I realize that, but THESE ARE STORIES I DON'T WANT NONE OF YOUR REALISM I want all my ends nicely tied off.
So I appreciated that.
Also I like what they're doing with Carl in this half of the season? I really don't care much for Carl but I think they're doing an excellent job of developing him as a character and as a child growing up in seriously horrifying circumstances. I like that without Lori he's becoming a lot more independent and I really like how that played off of Michonne in this episode. ALSO MICHONNE IS THE MOST BADASS RAINBOW CAT DID I MENTION THAT???
All in all A+, best episode this season.
Vikings 1x1, 1x2
I AM LOVING THIS jfkdlsjfdskl why aren't you all watching this already?!
NGL it's pretty brutal, and for those of you reading this and considering seeing it: there is a scene of attempted rape where Badass Shieldmaiden Character of Awesome kicks their asses, and there is a scene depicting the beginning and end of the rape of a slave girl, less graphic than GoT but still moderately graphic imo. So, I mean, go in forewarned or skip this one.
That said, omg I LOVE EVERYONE ON THIS LONGBOAT. It's all these gritty gross dirty hot people kicking ass and obviously it's a little too soon to say anything about the story but THIS ZAYNE IS SUPER INTRIGUED and looking forward to more. It's definitely the best representation of underage characters I have ever seen ever; the son, who is recognized as an adult starting in the first episode, is a very believable twelve-year-old to me. I often get frustrated with modern portrayals of children because even in historic narratives they tend to portray them as innocents, and just, if you've suffered the kind of hardship your average Viking kid's life would probably have seen, you aren't an innocent anymore, especially not by twelve. But at the same time he's very clearly not grown up yet, still very young, and just...
Very well-balanced great characterization A+. For all of the characters, but it just struck me particularly with the children because they are generally so poorly characterized in stories.
Also the monks have historically accurate haircuts and I cannot promise you will be able to watch their scenes without giggling uncontrollably. That might just be me though :s
The Americans 1x3, 1x4
Idk I'm kinda over it. The first episode was INCREDIBLE, the second was okay, and now I'm just kind of... bored? I think it's definitely a show I will enjoy more if I wait until it pops up on netflix and just marathon it, because it loses too much of its momentum watched week by week. I didn't actually make it all the way through episode four because I decided I would rather listen to violin music and write?
So yeaaah. Gonna wait for this one and do it all in one run.
(I also desperately want a lot of backstory for them and like, some of it is just I want the main characters' lives to be going differently? I feel like I would totally read that romance in fanfic but don't care for it overly much the way they're doing it on my screen.)
I tried this out. I'm a little surprised by all the feminist backlash because while the opinions of the men regarding the women are TERRIBLE and VERY VERY BAD, I think the actual portrayal of the women in the story is well dealt with a pretty realistic? Like you've got women struggling with the gender roles they've been consigned to during this era, dealing with or not dealing with sexism and the hostility of the workplace towards women during that era, and like... I quite enjoyed that? Basically I agree that it's terrible and totally understand why people wouldn't want to watch something so laden with sexism, but I think it's a faithful portrayal of the era and I think it's very clear from the narrative that that is why it's there, and not because it's reflective of the writer's opinions on women? But then I haven't read any of their interviews or any background on this so I might be missing some things.
I got bored for other reasons, mostly I Have Better Things to Watch, but I'll probably go back to it over spring break?
Game of Thrones is soon I think? :D???
