Are you able to go for a little while to do your duty, then leave ? It depends on what type of function it is and how many people will be there. If its canapes + drinks then you could flee after 1 hour or less (that's what we had for ours, it was great as I had arranged to go to the movies with a friend so could escape very early. However if its only a small party, people may notice your stealthily attempts to flee). If its a sit-down dinner, then maybe try to escape after the main course unless the dessert sounds really tasty :) You never know, you may actually have a good time, for the time that you are there. I felt uncomfortable at my work xmas party as most of the people I don't know (300 or so), so i just sat with the people I knew and had a drink or 2, and grinned and bore it for the time I was there.

It's a mingle/finger food thing. I'm aiming to be out of there by 7, so I'm home for the Simpsons :) Also the Rocks is dangerous at night so I don't want to be wandering around alone.
