I walked out after the moon tonight and followed it to the shore. A quiet shore, just feet of sand hidden under rolls of coarse sea grass. The wavelets twist and bind this grass into strands, and the strands splice in the shallows to form mats and cables, and like long braids of hair, this black sea grass marks the swaying handshake of lagoon and ( Read more... )

I walked out after the stars and admired them from my backyard hill. A noisy backyard, full of crickets, owls and the occasional car passing by a quarter of a mile away down the road. A finely cut lawn (I mowed it just that afternoon) cannot quite compare with the shoreline. Pine needles scatter as I stroll the green; twigs snap beneath my bare feet; mosquitoes linger round my ankles.

But in that stereotypical urban lawn, great oaks stretch upward scraping for stars. Pines pose against the fading blue with perfect posture. Lightning bugs dance, wishing to be amongst the those sky diamonds. So many trees, I can barely see the whole sky, but those faithful stars peek between the branches, seeking me out. Orion, Draco and others winked at me from on high; glittering smiles seeming to mock this mortal's existence.

And I thought to myself, Yep. It's just me and the lightning bugs.
