Communist architecture disturbs me. And bravo to Minsk for keeping their statue of Lenin. From what I understand, he wasn't such a bad guy, and communism played a very important role in their history.

Gregg, a few years I go to Helsinki, and take a walk following a guidebook. About half an hour into the walk, after seeing beautiful buildings, statues, etc., I come to Nr. 17 - Utilitarian Architecture. At which point I'm completely dumbfounded, because (as you can imagine) these are the ugliest apartment buildings you can imagine, even the panel blocks we have look better!

But communist architecture has an influence in the entire region - and, disturbing or not, it's here to stay.

Oh, I remember the stark gray spires of Sofia. I know they're here to stay, I just think they're unfortunate.

But London had its factory houses, New York had its tenements, and who knows what China's got... It's a part of rapid urbanization and industrialization. I just hope it's not too late to save Africa from this plight. :)
