No. :(

I will never understand why people think using the Holocaust as a plot device for their slash/gen/het/fanfic is ever all right. Millions of people DIED and even more people lost someone they LOVED.

I'm still nearly in tears over this. (Don't flame please, but if you think this is a bad idea, tell the author ( Read more... )

She locked the fic now and I guess this makes me even more angry. It feels like she's simply ignoring everybody, not even listening to people's concerns and taking their grief seriously. Definitely staying away from her in the future.

.......

I can't even imagine what would possess someone to write something like that.

Or to ask for it in the first place. o_O

And that would be because you possess those traits known as "common sense" and "tact".

Evidently.

I mean. I get the author's "don't like, don't read" - but this? Crosses over a line to something you just don't do.

Ugh. People.

Your comment was incredible. YOU are incredible. Unfortunately, I don't for one single minute think it's going to make a bit of difference how many comments that author receives, telling them that it's a bad idea. They already stated their opinion (rather forcefully) in response to vinylroad's comment(s) and keep coming back to "if you don't like it, find it offensive, don't read it/look at it/acknowledge it".

(My favorite part was their decrying any knowledge of fandom-go-boom last year over the BB Haiti fic, and the bandom one that followed... how is it even remotely possible NOT to be aware of at least one of those??)

*hugs you*

Admittedly, I was blissfully unaware of the bandom one... But how as you said, how can you not know of at least one of those? At the very least, the Haiti fic was talked about everywhere.

I think there was a point when reactions to both kind of melded, so it's hard to say for sure that the majority of people knew there were two separate stories, in two separate fandoms. All I remember specifically about the bandom story was it involved a Jewish character rewritten as a Catholic priest (and even that I'm kind of shaky on -- but I'm pretty sure that's what it was). But yeah.

I can already smell the approaching wankstorm with this particular prompt/story/author. Buckle up, I think things are about to start getting bumpy :(

i am not in this fandom but i remember others talking about a fic based in haiti as well. it appalls me that people can be so insensitive of such issues. it's disgusting, sure but mostly it's sad that they would think it's okay.

Yeah, there was apparently a J2 AU for last year's SPN Big Bang set in Haiti that was racist and really problematic. I don't understand why anybody would think it's okay to use a tragedy as grave as the Haiti earthquakes (which hit the poorest of the poor) or the Holocaust (where millions of people died) as a plot device.

I'm still shaken and upset over it. The post is now locked and as you said, the author came across as arrogant. I doubt they learned anything or even tried to understand.

I think using the Holocaust is like using 9/11 as a plot device to make you h/c hurt more or your angst more angsty. All while totally ignoring that there are real people connected to this event, who have real feels over what happened.

I'm glad too that so many people spoke up. It sadly only led the author to taking the easy way out and locking the fic - it's still out there, but at least we tried to do something. Sadly, the author will have to continue going through life as an ignorant person.
