Yes, more Star Trek blabbing

OK, I saw the movie last night. I was super hyped to see it. And the verdict was....

Mixed feelings for me. The acting was better than I had expected. The effects were fantastic. The plot was OK. I would see it again (in a theater with better sound).

Something was just a bit off for me though. I have been a fan since I was a kid. I have James
Doohan's autograph. I'm hard core! :-)

Honestly, I think I would have liked it more if the new BSG hadn't happened. My tastes in sci-fi have grown a bit dark I suppose, and I think I wanted something grittier. Granted, there was no indication that would be the case. The kinda cheesy humor was no cheesier than the original. But BSG took it to such an emotional place, and I just loved that. I needed to just accept the new Trek as pure entertainment, but I cringed every time a character said something directly out of the series, when Scotty says, "I'm giving it all I've got Captain," or McCoy says, "I'm a doctor, not a physicist." I would have preferred fewer nods to the past honestly. Loved that the character who got incinerated by the drill thing was wearing a red suit. THAT was subtle.

The biggest problem for me? Spock. Bringing Nimoy into the film really prevented it from becoming its own entity. It held it back. I don't think they needed it to make fans happy. For me, that was a fail. Every scene with him was so hokey. The friendship between Kirk and Spock did not have to be spelled out so glaringly. Perhaps that kind of stuff was a way to throw in back story for those who are too young to be familiar with the original series....but even then, they were open to changing/adding other new ideas, like the Spock/Uhura plot (huh? what?) so why focus so much on continuity on that one aspect?

Last gripe: Karl Urban was not working for me, which surprised me. Seemed like he was trying way too hard to be all bonesy.

OK, rambling review, but I wanted to get this out while it was fresh. I feel like a grouch, given that the internets are basically one big Trek-induced wet spot right now.
