The Economist style guide on Americanisms

The Economist's style guide includes a fascinating (to dorks like me) page on the distinctions between British and American usage. I had no idea about a lot of these things. "To host a party" is an Americanism? "To slate" can mean "to abuse" in Britain ( Read more... )

I think it's interesting how the language has drifted so much in a few hundred years. My Enlish teacher in high school always got on us for using "mad" when we meant "angry", so it's something I'm still mindful of.
