farming decisions

I decided that I cannot take on getting my own market garden going this year. After this past winter I've just had too difficult of a time focusing on what I would need to do in order to have a successful season. So instead I am just going to work for another farm or farms in the area and when I am not working concentrate on projects around the ( Read more... )

I came to Phil'a with the idea of finding land to farm, all bright-eyed and eager, but the more I think about what a farm business entails the more scared I get. So this summer is me having the non-dirty fun that I've missed out on for the past three years (which seems to be a lot of contra dancing and not much else) and working as little as possible to get by. I'm going to try to meet people and visit the farms that are here, visit the markets, get a sense of this city, but my main focus is on living right now. I kind of lost that focus last season and I came out of it in very bad shape, so maybe this is the break I need right now to be able to keep to the urban farm dream in the future.

I like your ideas and the face that they have all incarnated into lots of contra dancing. Marie and I are talking about attempting contra sometime. Do you want to come up for a visit and maybe you could show us the ropes?

You're welcome either way in your quest of not doing much for the summer.

BTW, I too am going to be spending a lot of time visiting markets and talking to farmers. I feel lucky that this summer off is still going to involve some working on another farm.

I don't know when I'll be able to visit, but I'll keep you in mind. What are the dances in your area? If I can get you into shape, you should check out the Dance Flurry Festival in Saratoga Springs in February. I've been a couple times now and it's a lot of fun. http://www.danceflurry.org/

Thinking about it, I'm planning on going to the Common Ground Fair in Maine at the end of September. You're not really on the way, but I could plan to make that a longer trip.
