Apparently we have Joseph Gordon-Levitt to thank for Arthur's wardrobe in Inception:

You know, I gotta say when I first started working on Inception, some of the drawings they showed me of their ideas for that character was uh sort of schlubby, sort of like, well he’s the tech guy, he runs the machines, you know, so maybe he should be wearing some ( Read more... )

It would have been so different. Not as much suit porn to begin with and Arthur's characterisation in fic would have been more geeky/nerdy/hipster/nice guy than badass/Vulcan/what-are-feelings-and-relationships?

Arthur/Ariadne would be hipsters in love and probably less popular because of their similarities = less conflict and contrast.

Arthur/Eames would have seen even more bottom!Arthur and age difference fics.

I'm glad JGL took Arthur in a different direction because the tech support guy in movies and TV shows is always geek chic - Converse and casual t-shirts - that it's a bit of a cliché in costume design.

IT'S NICE TO SEE AN ACTOR ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE OF COSTUMING IN CONSTRUCTING A PERFORMANCE.

This confirms that Arthur's suits are not a sign of him being a) repressed, b) uptight, or c) a conservative dresser (because, yes, some people seem to labour under this delusion). He just really cares about the details!!! And he knows them so well he can put together stylish looks!!!!
